Viral Marketing with VideosViral Marketing and Viral Advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet.

Widgets, Gadgets & Games

Games, Gadgets, WidgetsEverybody should know what a widget is by now. But a lot of people are unaware of the fact that you can make money and/or generate traffic using widgets. Many also don't realize that you can get some widgets for your site as well as to offer to others in as little as about thirty minutes. I'm going to tell you how. First things first, for widgets for your site, you need to decide where they are going to go roughly so you know your width that you need to stay within. Now, here are three places you can go (and you can time it to see how close I am) and get widgets for your site; plus you can build a widget for your RSS feed to offer to your visitors:

Online Tutorials - Magiclogix.comIf we make them, they will come. Creating Online Tutorials are always a guaranteed way to generate regular traffic to our website. Tutorials are not only useful, they help make us look more like an authority to potential clients and that's always a plus!

Online Press ReleasesOnline Press Releases were originally designed as a communication tool between company PR staff or public relations firms and the media. But now that online news sites such as Yahoo News and Google News contain such an abundance of press release content and RSS makes it easy to syndicate news, press releases can be effectively used as a direct to consumer communication tool.

Knowledge Base - Magiclogix.comIn general, a Knowledge Base is a centralized repository for information: a public library, a database of related information about a particular subject, could all be considered to be examples of knowledge bases.

Forums can be a useful for anyone doing business online, both in terms of reading the content and actively participating in the discussions. Reading a forum's archives can be a good way to obtain a basic knowledge about a topic, and it also provides a historical perspective on trends and opinions.

Social bookmarks are a relatively new phenomenon on the Web. The concept behind this new trend is rather simple which is often the case with good ideas.

WikipediaA Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

Link-Building can be defined as the practice of requesting links from webmasters of other sites for the purpose of increasing your "link popularity" and/or PageRank."

Wiki defines RSS or Real Simple Syndication as: "A family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays."

Word of Mouth Marketing (also called Online Endorsement Marketing) is a marketing strategy which uses the person-to-person communication of satisfied customers to raise awareness of an organization's products and services and generate sales. This is also a very useful tool to disuading potential customers online that Magic Logix, Inc. is the best web development company on the web.

BloggerBack in late 2002 Pyra Labs, the company that owned and developed Blogger was acquired by Google. Now, since Blogger.com is hosted on the Google servers, their spiders tend to like any content generated there. As you all already know, our new blog on Blogger.com is now up and running.

There are so many criterions that search engines follow to determine a site's rank for certain key or search words. One of these includes links to your site. The page rank of a site is directly related to the number of links it has. The more links you have pointed to your site, with some variation of the key phrase you want to rank high for, the better ranking in the search engines you will receive.

Something that’s helpful in a development team is sticking to one naming convention. It can be very helpful when one team member needs to modify another team members code. For example, a = b * c makes little sense as opposed to pointTotal = points * quantity. In the early days of programming variable names were kept as small as possible to conserve memory but now in the days of gigs and gigs of space there is no reason to do so. While we should not go overboard we should make our code as descriptive as we can (as well as comment and indent it!).

When categorizing a web site, there are many views designers take on labeling a site with good design or a bad design. I will point out some features that you should look out for, and consider when breaking apart the design of a web site. I will not go in depth in what a site should contain as far as content goes. This is a holistic view of the design view in general.

Building PHP applications using a third-party framework can be a time-consuming process, particularly in those cases where the software chosen requires installing and configuring a large number of source files, as well as dealing with a long and difficult learning curve.

Luckily, not all PHP frameworks are created in the same painful way. A good example of this is Code Igniter, a solid piece of software written in PHP 4 that allows you to develop full-featured web applications by means of a friendly API, and by taking advantage of the functionality provided by the Model-View-Controller pattern.

Therefore, if you're interested in learning how to use the powerful tools that come packaged with Code Igniter and start creating full-blown database-driven applications in a very short time, then you should start reading this group of articles now!

The last company I worked for sends a lot of email blasts to their clients and users of their websites. They range from e-newsletters to client specific emails. For example, several of their websites let user accumulate points. Depending on how many points the user has they can redeem anything from a Chili's gift card to a Mini Cooper. Once a month we would send a status email. It list's points redeemed, earned and available. It would also list any current promotions being offered in the program. The emails are usually HTML with a text version included incase HTML is turned off.

As many of you may already know, Craigslist is a HUGE classified ads site, that actually works (not like the millions of garbage classified ad sites out there). In my opinion, companies should utilize the power of craigslist to generate more referrals.

Of course we should have a standardized letter of introduction, proper company titles in our signatures, etc... The correct protocol would have to be defined and approved by Top Management of course, but once that is set up, it can be used by all of your companies' employees.

A lot of people just use myspace, but there are literally hundreds of other social networking sites we can use to generate leads, traffic to our company website and a buzzword commonly used in marketing these days, "omnipresence". In essence, by having consistent information about our company across all the major social networks we are simultaneously link building to enhance our search engine placement as well as creating a coherent, branded experience for our end users.

This is one of the most important parts of our SEO strategy. Compliant XHTML, Original Content and Strategic Key Word Placement should be a given. I think it's pretty well understood each of our content pages should correlate with the most optimum key words for the service we are trying to sell, and each and every page should validate.

Before I get into the tools, techniques and strategies to enhance our online presence I wanted to stress a few key points.

First off, a big part of whether or not this will be successful depends on interaction from each and every one of us. The days of bots or AI crawlers (automated  programs that more or less spam the web with promotional links) are over. We literally have to have actual people doing most of this stuff or it simply won't work. There are a few shortcuts we can use, but for the most part we have to get our hands dirty to do this right.

The Intranet brings together Web sites owned by departments, divisions, and individuals across the organisation. It may link local and regional offices, and employees of diverse cultures and languages. The strategy for designing a Web site requires an understanding of the context of use, user and organizational requirements, produce design solutions, and evaluation of design solutions against requirements. If this appears similar to product design - it is. Content, design, consistency and maintenance are essential to quality. If done well, the Web site contributes to the corporate Intranet community.

If a SQL injection vulnerability exists on a website, the consequences can be very severe. Hackers can use this to gain administrator access, read and modify your database, and steal sensitive information. SQL injection works by using poorly coded SQL statements to do something they were not intended to do.

SQL Injection
Fortunately, SQL injection is very easy to prevent. Simply sanitize user input, and there won't be any problems.

A logo (Greek λογότυπος = logotypos) is a graphical element, (ideogram, symbol, emblem, icon, sign) that, together with its logotype (a uniquely set and arranged typeface) form a trademark or commercial brand. Typically, a logo's design is for immediate recognition, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority. The logo is one aspect of a company's commercial brand, or economic entity, and its shapes, colors, fonts, and images usually are different from others in a similar market. Logos are also used to identify organizations and other non-commercial entities.

Exchanging links is important for search engine ranking. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The key is in how it's done. A link exchange is an agreement between two parties to place reciprocal links on their respective websites. It is not the same as a link farm, which is a website that consists primarily of indiscriminate links to other sites (sometimes called FFA, or free for all sites). Link farms are bad, and became popular for one reason: search engines love inbound links. At least they used to, until the spammers came along.

We get a lot of clients who come to us from a bad relationship with their previous web design firm. Whether their designer isn’t responsive or isn’t doing quality work or in many cases, simply disappeared from the face of the planet, a lot of website owners have been taken for a ride by fly-by-night web developers. (Word to the wise: check references and portfolios very carefully beforepicking a web designer! And if the person you found is way cheaper than most other firms, there is probably a reason why.)

There are several different spellings for this term. Although "website" and "web site" are commonly used (the former especially in British English), the Associated Press Stylebook, Reuters, Microsoft, academia, book publishing, The Chicago Manual of Style, and dictionaries such as Merriam-Webster use the two-word, initially capitalized spelling Web site. This is because "Web" is not a general term but a shortened form of World Wide Web. As with many newly created terms, it may take some time before a common spelling is finalized. (This controversy also applies to derivative terms such as "Web master"/"webmaster" and "Web cam"/"webcam"). The Canadian Oxford Dictionary and the Canadian Press Stylebook list "website" and "web page" as the preferred spellings. The Oxford English Dictionary began using "website" as its standardized form in 2004.

  1. Branding is not just a logo. It’s about building a relationship with your existing and potential customers and business partners. A blog can do just that.

  2. You can test new products and ideas without having to spend a dime. Simply ask your readers to give you feedback. It’s always exciting to see how many customers will read your blog and make suggestions. It removes the communication barrier by making things more personal and friendly.
